Mount Bromo is an active volcano in 2329 meters over sea level along with part of the Tengger massif, in East Java, Indonesia. The mountain is only one among several peaks of the massive Tengger Caldera. But it is easily recognized as the top was blown off and the crater inside continuously letting out white sulfurous smoke. The inside of the caldera is coated with fine volcanic sand, and the general effect is unsettled unearthly, particularly when in comparison into the lush green valleys all around the caldera. Based on folklore, in the conclusion of the fifteenth century, Lady RoroAnteng from the Majapahit Empire began a separate principality together with her husband, JokoSeger.
They named it Tengger following the last syllables of their names. The Principality flourished, but the ruling couple didn’t have children. In their desperation, they climbed Mount Bromo to pray to the gods, who granted them aid but requested the last kid to be sacrificed to the gods. They’d 24 kids, and once the 25th and the last children, Kesuma, was born RoroAnteng refused to make the sacrifice as promised. The gods then threatened with fire and sulfur while she sacrificed the kid. Following the kid was thrown to the crater, the voice of the kid ordered the regional individuals to execute an annual ceremony on the volcano, and this is still being held until today.
Bromo is known for its breathtaking sunrises and majestic views around to Semeru volcano at the south. You will usually need to get up at 3:30 am to arrive there in time to see the sunrise at Mount Penanjakan. Located just north of the caldera, the mountaintop perspective is accessible by paved the road in Tosari and therefore popular with jeeps as well as tour buses. It is a reasonably easy hike of 3 km from the main access point, CemoroLawang, at the foot of Mount Bromo. As an alternative, you can rent a pony to do the drudge work for you, or make it even easier and do the excursion by jeep.
Private cars aren’t allowed within the caldera. You may join the jeep bundle at IDR 40,000 per person in the Probolinggo entrance division. On the next morning, at 4:00 am, the jeep departs from hotel to catch the sunrise in Mount Batok. Following the sunrise, then go down the mountain Bromo.
