Listening to music that comes in a digital format does have it perks, mostly when it comes to comfort and practicality. However, the sound purists of the modern times argue that it pales in comparison to what the analog format has to offer, and so, numerous people are starting to collect the good old vinyls again. Even though the modern record players have come a long way, here is what you need to consider before making the final buying decision:
How much you pay is directly correlated with the product’s quality
When it comes to modern vinyl record players, the good old saying is no less true; you get what you pay for. Therefore, it’s a good idea to try before you buy if you get the opportunity. Generally speaking, the cheaper models are designed to work out of the box, however, unlike the higher-end models, they may not be as upgradeable.
You’re likely going to need other pieces of hardware
Most mid-range record players don’t come with a speaker, which you’re going to need to buy separately. Also, most of them aren’t powerful enough to drive the speaker without a phono preamp. This is worth considering when determining your overall budget.
The stability of the surface it sits on matters a lot
Remember, you’re dealing with analog components, meaning that if you bump into the player, the needle can jump, which can distort the quality of the sound. The needle is extremely sensitive to any kind of vibration as well, so you’re going to need to place in on a stable surface.
Manual, automatic, or semi-automatic?
This refers to the way the needle is placed on the vinyl record. Manual means you’re going to have to do it yourself, potentially risking that you damage the record if you’re not careful enough. However, the method is really simple, so the risk is virtually non-existent. Automatic mechanisms will take care of this at the push of a button. Semi-automatic is a middle ground between the two. Most high-end record players use the manual system, but in the end, it’s up to you and your preferences.
Rotational speeds – why are they important?
7 inch records (singles) play at 45 RPM, while the longer 12 inch records (albums and Eps) play at 33 RPM. Nowadays, most modern record players support both of them, so you don’t have to worry about it. The only exception to this is if you’re going to be playing records produced before the fifties. These need to be played at 78 RPM, and you’re going to need to replace your stylus to do it.
What type of music will you be playing?
While most people will probably want to place their record player in a living room or the bedroom to play some relaxing tunes, you can also use it for something a bit less conventional like playing upbeat music while doing fitness training or exercising. No matter where you place it, make sure there’s enough room around it. That way, people won’t have to worry about accidentally bumping into it.
The sound quality of vinyl records is simply unparalleled and the modern digitally-compressed sound can never be compared to it. That’s why it’s easy to see why so many people are flocking back to the classic record players and enjoy the richer sound they offer. Are you ready to taste a new sonic dimension?
